agile Staff Toolset  -  innovation in addressing military business needs

What is the agile Staff Toolset?

The agile Staff Toolset was developed by Agile Ideas to meet some specific organisational development needs of the military - the aim being to take away the pain of some labourious staff tasks whilst improving the utility of their output.  The agile Staff Toolsets are customised and scaleable with each tool being able to stand alone or be integrated with others.  Wider integration and exploitation is enabled through the use of common architectures (e.g. MODAF or DODAF) and the highly versatile, commercial-off-the-shelf, MooD® software.

Current tools in operational use are:

aSOPT - agile Standard Operation Procedure Tool
aTLT - agile Task List Tool

What do they do?

aSOPT

provides a coherent and common methodology for capturing, modeling and communicating standard operating procedures (SOPs).  It asks - What is done? Who does it? What are the Inputs and Outputs? and What Knowledge Resources are Needed?  Replacing or supplementing existing “flat” SOPs, aSOPT produces dynamic web-based views and activated knowledge resources, including video; thus adding new dimensions to the type and range of information that can be made readily available to a diverse user community.  Moreover, once data is captured aSOPT provides the analyst with a highly visual means by which to evaluate, compare, measure and improve organisation and process.

aTLT

is similar to aSOPT in what it does, but differs in that it focuses on the high-level tasks that define military capability eg. Mission Essential Tasks.  At the basic level aTLT makes the management and communication of a large and complex data set easier and more visual.  Significantly though it is improving the utility of this data.  One of the more taxing questions faced by capability developers, trainers and readiness reporting systems is – “For what is this capability or force required?”  aTLT addresses this through its ability to dynamically create and define coherent “Scenarios” in a common language.  Once created these Scanarios can be re-used, shared, modified and so on.

How is it used and by who?

No two businesses are the same, so to get the most out of the toolset it is first customised to meet user specific requirements.  Typically, initial deployment and kick-starting of the project sees the Agile Ideas team of consultants and analysts working closely with the client.  Then, depending on the client needs; licensing, training and skills transfer will see the Agile Ideas team take a more supporting role, which may include ongoing development and technical support.
The agile Staff Toolset is currently in use at the UK Joint Warfare Development & Training Centre where, along with our people, it is supporting and enhancing the new Joint Force Operation Procedures and a review of the Joint Task List.

At present we also have several concept demonstrators e.g. “The Land Tactical and 6-Question Estimates” in development for other clients .

Will it work for us?

If you are a military organisation then the answer is a resounding yes. However, if your organisation operates in the commercial or government fields then our experience suggests that our methods and techniques are highly transferable.

Regardless, the agile Staff Toolset is an example of how Agile Ideas has been innovative in exploiting existing technologies to cost-effectively address the business needs of its clients.
