True business agility is fantastic - but difficult to sustain

A quick business quiz - How many of the top ten US companies in 1909 remained in the top ten in 1958?  And for a bonus point... how many were still in the top 100?

 

Fine…your customers are happy, they too want consistency and the last thing they need is any form of disruption to their business. So you maintain the status quo knowing that.

 

There is a paradox that occurs with almost all business success – overconfidence, a cognitive rigidity and a dogmatic persistence.  The business successes of the future, your competitors tomorrow, will not be constrained like you.   They don’t have much to lose in trying something new or embracing a new technology, they have a real ability to realise the need for adjustment and make it happen…

 

* you are really dealing with short term pressures not on what you really believe is going to happen in the future

 

* It is far too difficult to change the current way of doing things - a sort of frustrating inertia.

 

* The people in your team who want to try new things are expensive and their suggestions risky, in any case they have probably left.

 

* You are so focussed that you find identification of potential winning ways of doing things hard - often following your competitors into new areas.

 

* Finally and most commonly you simply don't have resources to do otherwise.
